Don Pietro Pappagallo - Via Urbana

(English) Plaque devoted to Don Pietro Pappagallo, priest and notable member of the anti-fascist movement in Rome during the Second World War. The plaque was placed in 1997 on Pappagallo's last house, in Via Urbana, near Piazza dell'Esquilino.
During the Resistance Pietro Pappagallo provided help and support to partisans and common people stalked by the nazi-fascist forces. He was arrested the 29 January 1943 and, later, killed in the Fosse Ardeatine massacre, the 24 March 1943.
His personal history ispired the screenwriter and director Roberto Rossellini for the Don Pietro Pellegrini character in the movie Roma, Open City (1945). The fiction moves away from reality: the character, played by Aldo Fabrizi, is still executed, but without to mention the Fosse Ardeatine massacre.
In 2006 Rai, italian national public broadcaster, produced a biographical fiction on Pietro Pappagallo. The role was interpreted by Flavio Insinna. The plaque in Via Urbana is honoured at every anniversary of the Fosse Ardeatine Massacre with a leaves garland posed by the municipality of Rome. Here a translation of the inscription:

Resistance Memorial - San Giovanni

Monumento ai Caduti della Resistenza - San Giovanni
(English) Monumental plaque devoted to the Fallen who served in sixth zone brigade of the Partito d’Azione during the Resistance in World War II. The plaque is placed in Viale Castrense, near Porta San Giovanni, on Aurelian Walls outer side. It’s next to the First World War Memorial to the Fallen from the boroughs of Appio, Latino e Tuscolano. The plaque, posed in March 1945, take up dimension, shape and placement, from the WWI plaque.
In the upper part of the monument is depicted the symbol of Giustizia e Libertà (Justice and Freedom) movement. Political moviment founded in Paris in 1929, by italian anti-fascist refugees. The Partito d’Azione (Action Party) was established in 1942 by representatives from Giustizia e Libertà, taken up the original name and the antimonarchical ideas of the party founded by Giuseppe Mazzini in 1853.
The symbol of Giustizia e Libertà is a black flaming gladius in a red field. In the monument the background is a red grain marble cut up in the form of a flame.
For the inscriptions are used letters in relief. Characteristic is the use the character “Λ” instead of “A”. This kind of font realize a monumental effect with a razionalist style. A style mitigated in the use of conventional “U”, instead of the “V” character, typical in commemorative plaques. Strange in the names on the right column is used the “V”.
The monument it’s well preserved. Only the “A” of Azione is gone, and two letters in the upper row has a small damage.
The plaques is still remembered, with a leaf galrand hanged at the bottom of the stone (not depicted in the photograph). The garland is placed at every Fosse Ardeatine mass execution commemoration (24 march).
Here a translation of the inscription:

(English) Monument, in the form of a plaque, remembering the soldiers coming from the boroughs of Appio, Latino e Tuscolano, Fallen during First World War. This high-relief is placed in Viale Castrense, near Porta San Giovanni, on Aurelian Walls outer side. Like in United Kingdom, these War Memorials devoted to the Fallen in World War I and erect soon after the war, are very common in Italy. So every borough of Rome at that time has its monument, like every town, or community, in Italy. This kind of "boroughs" War Memorial are usually in the form a monumental plaque. The plaque of San Giovanni is an high-relief, that depicts a Nike, Winged Victory, that sustain a fallen soldier. The soldier is represented with two the most immediatly tracts of the italian trooper during the war: the Moschetto '91 rifle, and the legs bands. On the left, at the bottom, is engraved an altar, with depicted a sword sorrounded by a palm leaf. The warlike symbolism is essential, and the monument is far away the martial style used later(*) in this Memorials, and warlike symbolism is essential. This aspect is remarked by art deco the font used for the small inscription, more lighter than the rationalist/constructivist style more common: Here a translation of the inscription:
TO THE FALLEN FROM BOROUGHS APPIO LATINO TUSCOLANO 1915-1918
-
  • (*)This is only a my hypothesis, because the monument doesn't have a date. But the style seems earlier, more near the 1910s than the 1920s.

Nazario Sauro - Rione Monti

(English) Plaque devoted to Nazario Sauro (1880-1916) placed in Via dei Serpenti near Piazza Madonna dei Monti. Austro-hungarian citizen, was an italian irredentist. He joined the Regia Marina (Italian Navy) at otubreak of First World War. During an action was made prisoner by k.u.k. Kriegsmarine (Austro-Hungarian Navy), and later senteced to death for treason.
The plaque was erected 20th september 1918, before the end of the war. Very ruined, almost illegible, probably never restored since 1918. In 2011, 24 May (jubilee of Italy's entries in war, 15 May 2011), will start a restoring of this plaque.
The mentioned "Merciful campaign of Avezzano" is referred to an earthquake that affect the city of Avezzano in 1915.
At the bottom of the plaque is carved the bow of a roman warship. The ram bow was a symbol of naval victory (and naval power) since the ancient Rome, attested by the "Rostra" in the roman forum.
Here a translation of the inscription:
