Omero Ciai, 'Maitardi' - Trastevere

(English) Plaque devoted to Omero Ciai, partisan during the second world war. 'Maitardi' was his nom de guerre. The plaque is placed at Via dei Vascellari 44, in Trastevere, near Lungotevere a Ripa, probably his house before he joined the Resistance.
Omero Ciai was born in Rome in 1923. Alpinist, in 1943 he was attending at the college of engineering of University La Sapienza in Rome. Soon after 8 September 1943 he joined the Resistance in Valle d'Aosta. Later he was seized by the german forces near the France border.
Deported in Germany, to escape, he sweared loyalty to the Italian Social Republic (RSI, Repubblica Sociale Italiane, the fascist state ruled by Mussolini, under german "care" in the northern Italy) and he enlisted in Alpine Division "Monte Rosa".
Returned in Italy as soon as possible he deserted from RSI, to join the Resistance in the "Coduri" division, part of the Garibaldi Brigades. Soon he became executive officer in the "Dall'Orco" Brigade.
Seized by german forces, he was killed 6 January 1945.
Posthumously, he was awarded with a Gold Medal of Military Valor (Medaglia d'oro al Valor Militare) and received the Engineering Degree Ad Honorem from the University "La Sapienza".

Here a translation of the Golden Medal motivation:
Young fighter, during the fight for liberation, he distinguished in many actions for his courage and resolution. So were entrusted to him relevant duties, always resolved with the higher sense of responsibility.
Seized in action, he preserved an heroic composure, reacting fiercely to the invectives cowardry pronounced againist Italy, by the enemies who imprisoned him. For this virile attitude he was slaughtered. Sestri Levante nearness, 22 january 1945.
